Payroll Protection Program Updates – Changes to Expense Deductions, New Funding, Expansion of ERC Credit, COVID Leaves and More

On Sunday, December 27th, President Trump signed into law the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 (the “Act”) which enacts many important changes to the Payroll Protection Program (“PPP”). Key changes brought about by the Act include:
- Families First Coronavirus Response Act Leave Mandate Expires December 31, 2020, but Tax Credits Continue: The Emergency Paid Sick Leave and Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion mandate expires December 31, 2020. After December 31, 2020, employers with fewer than 500 employees will no longer be required to provide paid leave to employees for COVID-19 related reasons.

Violence in the workplace, which includes physical violence, harassment, and intimidation, is on the rise. In fact, according to the most recent United States Bureau of Labor Statistics report on the matter, “violence by humans or animals,” which includes violence by persons, self-inflicted injury, and attacks by animals, are the second leading cause of workplace fatalities, second only to transportation-related incidents. Domestic violence situations spill into the workplace at times so companies should take steps to protect workers.
Prop 207: What Will Recreational Marijuana Mean for the Existing Medical Marijuana Program?
PROP 207: WHAT WILL RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA MEAN FOR THE EXISTING MEDICAL MARIJUANA PROGRAM?
Legalization of recreational marijuana in Arizona will be on the general election ballot in November 2020, following the Arizona Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling in August rejecting efforts to block the initiative. Because Arizona has almost ten years’ experience with its medical marijuana program, a common question is what would change if Prop 207 is approved?
Will approval of the initiative eliminate Arizona’s existing medical marijuana program? The quick answer: no.
The initiative, titled as the Smart and Safe Arizona Act, would add an entirely new chapter in Title 36 of Arizona Revised Statutes (Chapter 28.2) that establishes the recreational marijuana program.
