Firm founding member Grady Gammage, Jr. has released a new book: The Future of the Suburban City: Lessons from Sustaining Phoenix. The book examines sustainability in suburban cities.
Phoenix is a good illustration of how suburban cities are tackling the challenges of climate change in places where heat, drought, “sprawl” and the automobile define an urban fabric. The book takes a fresh look at what it means to be sustainable, and it examines issues facing most suburban cities: water supply, heat, transportation, housing, density, urban form, jobs, economics, and politics. At its core, The Future of the Suburban City is a realistic yet hopeful story of what is possible for any suburban city.
